Let’s face it. There is no easy money nor are there magical tips that will help you get rich quickly. To become wealthy, you have to put in some work. You have to strategize and spend money to become wealthy.

If you are looking for a passive income opportunity that will earn you money even when you sleep, then affiliate marketing is the right answer. The idea behind affiliate marketing is that you get to promote company products to your online visitors.

For every purchase your readers make via your affiliate link, your account is credited with a commission. To know more about affiliate marketing, let’s begin by understanding what it’s all about.

What is affiliate marketing?

This is the process where a blogger promotes a company’s products and earns a commission from the profit made on each sale. It can also be defined as the process of spreading product creation and marketing to other parties where every party earns a commission from revenue earned. In affiliate marketing, there are three parties involved – the product creator, the affiliate marketer, and the buyer.

The product creator
– also referred to as the merchant, is the brand or seller of the product. As the party that creates the product, it can be a Fortune 500 company or a business start-up.

The affiliate marketer
–this is the party that promotes company products. As the publisher, the affiliate marketer can be an individual or an entire company. The affiliate marketer uses a wide range of channels to attract and convince customers to purchase the products.

The buyer – this is the customer who sees values in a product and buys it. Without sales, no revenue is earned and so affiliates are not going to earn any commission.

Want to earn money even when you sleep?

Here are 10 tips on how to become a good affiliate marketer.

1.Learn more about SEO

Search Engine Optimization is one of the most popular techniques used by inbound marketers to attract customers to buy products on their websites and blogs. You will be surprised to know that this is a foreign term to many people today.

In affiliate marketing, there is a lot you can do with SEO.

For starters, you can create original, easy to understand, relevant and entertaining content about the products you are marketing. Alternatively, you can include tips and tricks to help your online visitors make the right decision. By creating content that is friendly and informative, search engines will rank your website higher making it easier for online users to find your website.

2.Understand keyword research

In line with SEO, keyword research is another important technique that every affiliate marketer needs to know if you want to become successful in affiliate marketing. To better understand what keyword research is, let’s begin by understanding what a keyword is? This is an informative word used by internet users to retrieve information or content on the internet or via an information retrieval system.

On the other hand, keyword research is a practice used by SEO experts to find and research valuable keywords to incorporate in content. By learning keyword research, you can create content that is searchable, relevant and easy to understand. A great tool for keyword research is Jaaxy.

3. Always provide value

As you pursue your goals of becoming a successful affiliate marketer and making money even when you are asleep, it is important to provide value to your readers. How do you go about this? Create content that you don’t plan on monetizing. Simply put, create informative, engaging and relevant content that provides useful information to your readers.

For instance, if you are marketing vacuum cleaners, you can create content on useful tips for maintaining a vacuum cleaner or a guide on how to properly use different vacuum cleaners. By providing content that adds value, you will increase your ranking for your website and get to attract more visitors.

4.Research your audience

Before you start marketing any products, it is important to take time and learn more about your readers or target audience. For instance, what are their tastes and preferences? What are their interests? Learning this and more will allow you to know what your target audience prefers.

If you don’t take the time to learn about your target audience, all your marketing strategies will fail no matter how charming you are. For instance, if you are marketing video games, you need to know what games your audience love and what video gaming console they prefer.

5.Outrank your competition

how to become a good affiliate marketer

A lot of affiliate marketers concentrate more on attracting traffic to their blogs. The reason they do so is to try and convince more visitors to buy the products. What upcoming affiliate marketers fail to realize is that they are not alone. Today, there are thousands of affiliate marketers spread across the world which means you have a lot of competition.

To be a successful affiliate marketer, you need to be a shark. This means you have to outrank your competition. If you can afford it, you should get properly trained in the field of affiliate marketing. My #1 choice for affiliate marketing training is Wealthy Affiliate. 6. Believe in the product(s) you are marketing

Do you believe in the product(s) you are planning to market because if you don’t, you will never be a successful affiliate marketer? To be successful in affiliate marketing, you must love the product(s) you are marketing. Don’t market products just to make an easy buck. You need to believe in the product.

Ask yourself this – would you want to use the product or not? If not, find products that you love and believe in. For instance, don’t market video games or video game consoles and yet you hate gaming. It’s better to market products that you frequently use.

7. Avoid the common mistakes

Although affiliate marketing is one of the best passive income opportunities, there are common mistakes that affiliate marketers make along the way. By learning about these mistakes and avoiding them, you will get to become a successful affiliate marketer.

Here are the common mistakes to avoid in affiliate marketing

  • Avoid joining too many affiliate networks
  • Not tracking your performance metrics
  • Never publish low quantity content
  • Overlooking your site speed
  • Ignoring the basics of SEO
  • Failing to compare products
  • Not collecting emails from your prospects and existing customers
  • Not tracking your affiliate links

8. Start with a handful of great products

As an upcoming affiliate marketer, start with a handful of products. Also, start with a one affiliate program. Starting with too many affiliate programs can be overwhelming and in the end, you will be unable to promote any product properly. Simply put, look for products that align with your niche and target audience. For instance, you can start with vacuum cleaners and select 5 to 10 products.

9.Test and track your affiliate campaigns

From the moment you post your first affiliate link in your content, start split testing. Split testing is where you test two variations of something with the goal of learning which works better and which does not.

To run the test, you require two things:

1.Technology that will help you to randomly serve the variations to your online visitors

2. A way of analyzing the data/results

Areas you can split test include your lead sources, your affiliate ads, your landing pages, and your incentives if any.

Remember, when you create a new test, resist the urge to test several things at once. Always start with one item. You can also use free split checkers available online.

10. Never give up how to become a good affiliate marketer

Affiliate marketing is not as simple as it used to be a few decades ago. Today, there are thousands or even hundreds of thousands of affiliate marketers promoting different products online. According to experts, there are more than 1.5 billion websites on the internet. This tells you that competition is rife in affiliate marketing.

By learning this, you probably are wondering if you should become an affiliate marketer. Well, I highly encourage you to become an affiliate marketer despite the challenges and obstacles ahead. Although many people have joined affiliate marketing and some have failed, there are those who have succeeded.

What this tells you is that by starting with a handful of good products, building a one-page campaign, working on sales funnels and sticking to one niche, you will realize your goals and become a successful affiliate marketer.

Simply put, never give up.

Final Thoughts

Now that you know the 10 tips on how to become a good affiliate marketer, its time for you to start exploring. As said earlier, there are challenges and obstacles along the way but if you keep in mind all the tips highlighted above, you should achieve success within a short time.

One of the things that I don’t do very often is tracking my progress. I am only relying on organic traffic at the moment and the only interface that I am using is Google search console whereby. If I make more impression or clicks, I assumed that my content is ranking. If not, I assumed that I am just in the queue, or worse, never get ranked at all. You mentioned about split testing – how does that work?

    1. Ed

Thank you Cathy. Split testing is basically comparing two variations of the same web page to see which one performs better, thus optimizing sales and conversions. You can use Google Optimizer to perform split testing. I hope this helps.

I’ve been doing affiliate marketing for 10+ years.  However, I do want to create my own product.  I have heard that you can create an eBook and then integrate it with Clickbank.  However, I’m not really sure how to go about it.  Have you ever created a product for Clickbank.  If not, any pointers for doing it correctly?

    1. Ed

Thank you Garen. Rather than go through a long explanation on how to create an eBook. I am going to attach a link to a lesson from a gentleman named Steve from Wealthy Affiliate. He goes into a lot of detail about writing techniques and so on. I think that you will find this very helpful. You can click here for the lesson. Good luck!! And I hope this helps!
